STEP 4 : BUILDING THE SAW FRAME . Now it's time to move on to the frame for your homemade bandsaw mill. For this, we'll be using salvaged 2 x 4 boards. It's important to select boards that are straight and free of warping. Once you've chosen your boards, it's time to smooth out the edges using a bench hand plane.
Put all of that together in my head, made a sketch in about 5 minutes, then went to my 10'x20' shed with my wire welder, torches and my 4" angle grinder, and got to work. With a lot of bed frame, all thred, lawn mower parts, bike parts, etc, I built a small band mill. I have in it.
STEP 1 : MAKING THE WHEELS To begin the construction of your homemade bandsaw mill, the first step is to create the wheels. For this purpose, we recommend using a 3/4 inch MDF board, as it is affordable and easy to work with. The size of the wheels should be around 16 inches in diameter.
You can then build the building over it as you go. Make the door opening to the mill at least two feet wider than the longest log you can saw and 12 feet high. No matter how big you make the saw shed it will be too small. I would pour the pad 16 feet wide as a min and 12 feet longer then the mill.
Rust is easier to deal with than a rotting timber. But I don't like the cost of the steel. A 20' 4x6 steel tube is about 200, while I can mill out a timber and it costs me nothing since I already have some logs. Then there's the question of what is more rigid, an 8x8 white pine beam, or a 4x6 steel tube.

The tablesaw, which appears in FWW #41, has a sliding table. The arbor doesn't tilt, but the saw is made for crosscuts, so it's not that big of a deal. If Mr. Winchip did need to make a cut with the blade tilted, he could just use one of the two tiltarbor tablesaws that he made. The saw cost about 300 to make in 1983.
